In June 2021, I joined The Great Resignation and left my fulltime government job to focus on what brings me joy, creating wearable and useable art pieces. Through my business, Art by Sophia, I create products that make a statement including earrings, tumblers, clothing and more. I have a wide range of earrings from occupation based to quirky/funny to statement pieces. I can customise or personalise nearly anything and am commonly engaged to create custom tumblers, earrings and corporate merchandise. I offer corporate merchandising with no or low minimum order quantities and make all of the pieces in my studio in Rockhampton, Central Queensland. I have built my business and brand into a successful operation gaining national and local media attention.
On a mission to continue doing what brings me joy, I started Catsumi, an online boutique store for cats. Catsumi is focussed on enriching the lives of cats through play and is named after my Siamese Cat, Umi. For many years, I have imported Umi's toys from America (she is definitely not spoilt) and Covid-19 made working with my supplier difficult as a lot of international shipping agencies ceased shipping between countries. Umi loves these products and I was determined to find a way to bring them to Australia. So having a taste for entrepreneurship and loving a good challenge, I decided to put everything I had learnt running Art by Sophia, into running Catsumi and I am now the exclusive Australian stockist for Dezi and Roo, an American-based company bringing the outdoors inside. Catsumi is all about sourcing cat toys that encourage and stimulate a cat's natural instincts and encourage responsible pet ownership.
Fast forward to today and I am the owner and founder of two small businesses which are both gaining in popularity and success. In 2021, I was named a finalist in the Capricorn Enterprise 2021 Best in Business awards and was named by The Morning Bulletin as one of the 150 Top Rockhampton and Capricorn Coast Business Women.
In addition to being an entrepreneur, I also continue to remain active in the parks and leisure industry. I am the Co-Chair of the Asia Pacific Region and serving member of the Board and Executive of World Urban Parks and a Certified Parks Professional International, recognising my contributions to the parks and leisure industries. World Urban Parks is the international body and go to for advice and support for urban parks, open spaces and recreation issues and people.
